SpotPay and the Calypso Card: For Caribbean Entrepreneurs

SpotPay is the new solution on the block for many Caribbean entrepreneurs and having convenient ways to manage your money matters. If you’re a freelancer, affiliate marketer, selling digital products or someone working remotely from the Caribbean, you probably understand the challenge of receiving and accessing money from international sources.

I’ve recently been exploring the app and I thought I’d share it because it might be worth looking into, especially if you’re based in the Caribbean. Let’s get down to the details.

What Is SpotPay?

Spotpay App

SpotPay is a digital financial services platform that allows users to hold, send, receive, and spend money through a digital wallet.

One of its main features is the Calypso Card, which allows users to make online and in-person purchases wherever Visa is accepted.

The idea is to give people more convenient ways to manage money across borders without having to depend entirely on traditional banking options.

A Caribbean connection behind SpotPay

Something else I found interesting is the story behind the company.

SpotPay’s founder, Zsika Phillip, grew up between the Caribbean and Latin America. Having experienced some of the challenges associated with moving money across borders, he understood the need for better financial tools for people in these regions.

I appreciate seeing entrepreneurs build solutions around problems they have experienced themselves. It’s also encouraging to see someone with Caribbean roots contributing to the development of financial technology that could benefit people in our region.

How Could SpotPay Benefit Caribbean Entrepreneurs?

I can think of several situations where a service like this could be useful.

1. Freelancers receiving international payments

If you’re a graphic designer, virtual assistant, web developer, writer, consultant, or other independent professional working with international clients, you need reliable ways to receive your earnings.

SpotPay provides options for receiving and managing money internationally. Whether it works with your particular client or payment provider will depend on the available transfer methods and your account eligibility.

2. Affiliate marketers and content creators

Affiliate marketing is another opportunity that allows people in the Caribbean to earn income online. You could be promoting products through Amazon Associates, software affiliate programmes, or other international networks. Some of these programmes pay commissions through specific payment providers or bank transfer methods.

Having another financial platform to explore could be useful, especially when looking at how to access and manage those earnings. Just remember to check whether your particular affiliate programme supports SpotPay’s receiving methods.

3. Remote Workers

Remote work has created opportunities for people to work with companies outside their home countries. If you’re employed or contracted by an overseas company, SpotPay could be another option worth investigating for receiving and spending your earnings.

Before submitting your payment details to an employer, however, confirm that its payroll provider supports the account details or transfer method SpotPay provides.

4. Exploring alternatives for PayPal withdrawals

PayPal is widely used by freelancers, online business owners, and people earning money through digital platforms. One thing I’ve personally started exploring is the connection between PayPal and SpotPay.

When I linked my SpotPay account details to PayPal, PayPal sent two small verification deposits to confirm the account. I received those deposits successfully. That is a useful first step, but I haven’t yet tested a full PayPal withdrawal into SpotPay. If you’re interested in trying this, check the compatibility of your PayPal account and the receiving details SpotPay provides before relying on it for regular payments.

Receiving USD Payments Into SpotPay

Within the SpotPay app, you’ll find US account and routing numbers that you can share with eligible senders to receive USD payments. This could be particularly useful if you’re a freelancer, remote worker, or entrepreneur working with clients and businesses in the United States.

Who can send money to your SpotPay account?

According to the information provided within the app, eligible senders include:

  • Yourself, from your own bank account
  • Your employer, for payroll
  • A registered business
  • A family member who shares your surname
  • Another individual

How does the transfer work?

The process is fairly straightforward:

  1. Share your US account and routing details with the sender.
  2. The sender initiates an ACH transfer or wire from their bank.
  3. Once processed, the funds are converted and credited to your SpotPay balance.

According to the app, ACH transfers typically take 1 to 3 business days, while wires may be processed the same day if received before the bank’s cutoff time.

Are there receiving limits?

Yes. The app lists the following limits per transfer:

Sender

Limit

Your Own Bank Account

US$5000

Employer Payroll

US$10,000

Registered Business

US$10,000

Another Individual

US$4000

These limits are based on the information currently displayed in my SpotPay app and may change. Always check your own account for the latest details.

Important: The app states that transfers from sources not on its approved list are returned to the sender. So before sharing your details with a client, employer, or payment platform, confirm that the transfer is supported.

Getting to Know the Calypso Card

SpotPay Calypso Card

The Calypso Card is probably one of the most interesting features of SpotPay.

You can use the virtual card for online purchases, and the supported mobile wallet functionality allows for contactless payments at compatible payment terminals.

Some of the features worth exploring include:

  • Online purchases using your virtual card.
  • In-person payments at merchants accepting the supported card network.
  • Contactless payments using a compatible mobile wallet.
  • Managing your card and transactions through the SpotPay app.

I currently have the virtual Calypso Card set up, including its tap-to-pay functionality.

One important thing: read the card’s current terms carefully. SpotPay’s international card agreement describes digital-asset collateral and repayment obligations associated with card spending. Understand the spending limits, collateral requirements, and fees before using it.

SpotPay vs Payoneer vs Wise: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve been looking for ways to receive international payments, you may already be familiar with Payoneer and Wise. These are three services worth knowing about, although they serve somewhat different purposes.

Payoneer

Payoneer is an established platform, particularly among freelancers, online sellers, and businesses receiving payments from international clients and marketplaces. It provides receiving accounts in multiple currencies, subject to eligibility.

If you’re already working with platforms that support Payoneer, it may be a suitable option for managing your international earnings.

Wise

Wise is popular for international money transfers and managing multiple currencies. However, there’s an important distinction for Caribbean users.

Wise debit cards are not currently available to residents of Trinidad and Tobago.

You may come across people recommending Wise as an international payment solution, but it’s important to distinguish between the availability of its services and the availability of its payment card.

SpotPay

SpotPay offers a digital wallet and the Calypso Card, with features for sending, receiving, and spending money. For Caribbean users interested in exploring additional financial tools, it’s another option worth looking into. However, check the available receiving methods, fees, card conditions, and account eligibility before deciding whether it meets your needs.

How to Get Started With SpotPay
